Abbey Mills Pumping Station

2021 (United Kingdom)

Abbey Mills Pumping Station A was completed in 1868 & served as a sewage pumping system until the modern Station F was built in 1997. It does remain in use today but as a back up to the new facility.

This tour was available as part of the excellent London Open City & it was an opportunity to see this incredible Grade II listed building close up and inside. The Italian Gothic style building has distinctive yellow bricks. The interior boasts wonderful ironwork and colourful tones throughout. At the centre, a lantern tower looms above the whole station. It's a stunning piece of design almost hiding its working purpose with the level of architectural beauty.
